Thank you all for coming. I am very happyto be here. This is my first trip to China, and I am very excited to be able tomeet my Goosebumps readers and to be able to talk to Chinese authors, educators, and publishers。

I would like to introduce my wife JaneStine and her business partner at Parachute Properties, Joan Waricha. They aremy editors and they work with me to create my books back in the United States。

I live in New York City now, which isalways exciting for me. Because I grew up in a small town in the middle of ourcountry, which was very quiet and very unexciting!

I dreamed of being a writer from the time Iwas nine years old. And I dreamed of living in New York City. But I never

dreamed I would be here today in China, talking to you about my books!

Talking to you today, I feel I have reallytraveled far. It gives me such a wonderful feeling to know that my Goosebumpsbooks are enjoyed so far away from home, by children in so many countries whoread in so many different languages。

I am a very lucky author. So far, theGoosebumps books have been translated into 32 different languages. And theyhave sold nearly 300 million copies. I am so glad that Chinese children are nowdiscovering the Goosebumps books, as well as my new series, which is just beingpublished here, called Goosebumps HorrorLand。

I am also a lucky author because I receiveso much mail from my readers and so many emails. They write to me to tell mewhich books they like and which books they don't like. They ask many questionsabout my life, about writing. And they send me hundreds and hundreds of storysuggestions. (Which is good-- because I need all the help I can get!)

Recently, a girl wrote this letter to me:

Dear R.L. Stine, I really enjoy readingyour Goosebumps books, but I bet you can make them much shorter. I think youcould get them down to 25 pages-- if you really tried!

I thought this was a funny letter. Thisgirl obviously likes to read-- but she doesn't like to read THAT MUCH. As shesays, she would like a nice, SHORT read!

We have a real problem in the UnitedStates. I wonder if you have that same problem here. In my country, there areso many entertainments and distractions and activities, it is hard to get kidsto sit down and read a book。

Books are so much slower and more difficultthan playing a video game or text-messaging friends on a phone or visiting websites and messaging or playing games on a computer. When you look at the listof activities that are popular with young people-- when you look at their worldof computers and iPods and TV screens and game players and cell phones-- youask yourself, how can we ever get them to sit still and read a book?

Getting kids to read is a real problem inmy country. Teachers and parents talk about it all the time. We all know thatthe only way to develop good reading skills is to READ. The more you read, thebetter a reader you become. But how do you bring kids to reading? How can youshow them that they can be just as entertained by a book as by a video game orTV show?

These were questions I asked myself when westarted to do the Goosebumps series. My answer was to write books that wereeasy to read, easy to understand, very fast-moving and exciting, with manysurprises and twists along the way. Books that will entertain and get kidsenthusiastic about reading。

People ask me: Why do you write SCARYbooks?
